G.R.E.A.T. Program

The Ottawa Police Department’s Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program was implemented during the Fall of 2006.  The G.R.E.A.T. program reaches 6^th grade students in Ottawa schools.  The program focuses on the harmful effects of gangs, violence and other destructive behaviors.  The G.R.E.A.T. program is a skills-based approach that address student’s attitudes and behaviors.  During the 13 week program students develop a positive relationship with their law enforcement officer/instructor.  Unique combinations of skills training, discussion and role playing activities enable students to learn the skills needed to avoid destructive decisions.
